The 3-Card Creative Block Spread
2/26/26
Creative block can feel like staring at a blank page that’s staring back. Not in a romantic, windswept “artist” way. More like: my brain is a cluttered drawer and I can’t find the scissors.
When I’m stuck, I don’t ask tarot to “fix” me. I ask it to show me what’s true, what’s tender, and what one small step would bring me back to myself.
This 3-card spread is simple, grounding, and designed to end with action, not overthinking.
What you’ll need
A tarot deck you like (or even an oracle deck works)
A notebook or scrap paper
Optional: a timer (5–10 minutes is plenty)
Before you pull, take one breath and name what’s happening out loud, gently:
“I feel blocked.”
That’s it. No dramatic backstory required.
The 3-Card Spread
Card 1: The Fog
Question: What’s actually blocking me right now?
This card points to the real root of the stuckness: overwhelm, fear of judgment, perfectionism, grief, scattered energy, boredom, lack of rest, lack of structure, or even lack of meaning.
Journal prompts (pick one):
What am I avoiding admitting is true?
What feels too big, too messy, or too vulnerable?
If this block had a texture or weather, what would it be?
Do this next (1 minute):
Write a one-sentence truth:
“Right now I’m blocked because ______.”
No debate. Just clarity.
Card 2: The Need
Question: What do I need in order to create again?
This card reveals what your nervous system is asking for: safety, rest, play, boundaries, permission, inspiration, accountability, simplicity, support, solitude.
Journal prompts:
If I treated my creativity like a relationship, what would it be asking me for?
What am I trying to force that needs gentleness instead?
What’s missing: time, energy, confidence, direction, comfort?
Do this next (2 minutes):
Finish this sentence:
“I can meet this need by ______, today.”
Keep it small. Tiny counts.
Card 3: The First Spark
Question: What is one small, specific action I can take in the next 24 hours?
This is the card that turns insight into movement. Not a five-hour masterpiece. A first spark.
Journal prompts:
What’s the smallest version of creating I can do?
What would “easy” look like right now?
What can I do even if I’m not inspired?
Do this next (5 minutes): Choose ONE micro-action
Pick one and do it immediately, or schedule it for later today:
Make a “bad collage” on purpose with scraps
Write 6 messy lines (not a poem, just lines)
Pull out supplies and set them on the table
Create a color palette with 3 colors
Do a 10-minute timer and stop when it ends
Make one mark. Just one.
How to read the spread (without spiraling)
Here’s the secret: the cards aren’t a final verdict. They’re a mirror with a flashlight.
To keep it supportive, use this three-step translation:
Name it: What is this card saying in plain language?
Soften it: What would I say to a friend experiencing this?
Act on it: What’s the smallest step this points to?
Tarot works best when it becomes a bridge back to your body, not a maze in your mind.
Quick examples (if you want training wheels)
Use these as inspiration, not rules:
Eight of Swords (Fog) → “I’m blocked by fear and self-judgment.”
Four of Swords (Need) → “I need rest, quiet, recovery.”
Page of Wands (First Spark) → “I need play. I’ll try something new for 10 minutes.”
Or:
Two of Pentacles (Fog) → “Too many tabs open.”
Knight of Pentacles (Need) → “Steady, simple routine.”
Ace of Cups (First Spark) → “Create something that feels comforting.”
A gentle closing ritual
After you finish, place your hand on your deck (or your journal) and say:
“I’m allowed to begin imperfectly.”
Because you are.
